Banksy Defends Wearing Mask With New Work In London Underground

The British artist carried out graffiti in the metro of the English capital, aiming to sensitize the passengers to the wearing of the mask to fight against the coronavirus.

Banksy struck again, this time in the London Underground. On Tuesday evening, the graffiti artist posted a video on his Instagram account in which we are assisting in the creation of his latest work. A man in an oar cleaner’s suit – probably the artist himself – painted stenciled rats on the wall of a wagon. Drawings intended to defend wearing a mask to fight the coronavirus, as the caption of the video shows: “If you don’t wear a mask, you don’t understand anything”.

These rats are represented in different situations. One of them sneezes, leaving a bluish trail, another uses a mask as a parachute, while a third covers the muzzle with it. The rat is a recurring figure in the works of the mysterious artist, who travels the world and sows behind him committed graffiti.

The work has already disappeared

The video ends with a tag of Banksy which delivers a message of hope. The artist performs a play on words with the title Tubthumping from the Chumbawamba group, which could be translated as: “I’m quarantined, but I’m getting up.”

This work echoes the latest measures taken against the coronavirus in the United Kingdom, where the wearing of a mask will be mandatory in stores from July 24. Passengers on the London Underground could not admire this work for very long: the company Transport of London, which applies a strict policy against graffiti, has already erased it.
