At least seventeen people have died and dozens are missing on Monday in the sinking of a ferry collided with another vessel on the river in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, rescuers said.
“Navy divers recovered 17 bodies from the sinking ferry,” Rizina Akter, fire chief, told AFP. “There were 50 people on board (…) Our divers are continuing the search,” she added.
Frequent accidents
The Morning Bird ferry was struck by another ferry just a few meters from Sadarghat, the largest river port in Bangladesh.
The ferry came from a city in the center of the country and transported more than 50 people, many of them trapped in cabins, according to the account of witnesses gathered by local televisions.
Ferry accidents are common in Bangladesh due to the lack of compliance with safety regulations during construction on shipyards. Ferries are often overcrowded and shipwrecks common on bad weather days.
