Dhaka: Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has started his innings in politics. Shakib may become the candidate of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League party in the general elections to be held on January 7 in Bangladesh.
Shakib may contest in three constituencies in the elections. Awami League Joint Secretary General Bahauddin Naseem told AFP that Shakib had received nomination papers from three constituencies.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the main opposition parties will boycott the polls. “He is a celebrity and he has huge popularity among the youth of the country,” said Bahauddin Nasim, welcoming the cricket all-rounder to the party.
Shakib’s candidature has to be confirmed by the ruling party’s parliamentary board headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. If the opposition goes ahead with the election boycott, it is almost certain that Hasina will return to power for a fourth term. Hasina’s Awami League has ruled the country for 15 years.
