A ban on fishing and trade in shrimp came into force in Oman. The Ministry of Fisheries has also announced that the ban on catching and trading of shrimp has been imposed from December 1 to August 31.

The Ministry of Fisheries has instituted culturing keeping in mind the fertilization, reproduction and natural growth of shrimps. Before the ban begins, fishermen, fish transporters, companies, establishments, hotels, restaurants and persons involved in fishing and marketing should register the quantity of shrimp with the fisheries development department and centres, the ministry said.

Trade and export of shrimp will not be allowed during the ban period unless the remaining stock is registered in advance. Violators of the ban will face a fine of up to 5,000 riyals or imprisonment of up to three months or both. Equipment used for catching shrimps will be confiscated and the fishing license will be canceled temporarily or permanently.

The ministry asked everyone to cooperate to avoid legal action and fines. Monitoring campaigns will be organized in collaboration with concerned authorities to create awareness about fishing regulations.
