Bali will remain closed to foreign tourists for the time being | NOW

Foreign tourists are not welcome in Bali for the time being. The Indonesian island had planned to reopen its borders on September 11, but is refraining from doing so because the number of corona infections is rising.

Balinese governor Wayan Koster said reopening of Bali has been postponed because “the situation in Indonesia is not desirable for international tourists to visit the country, including Bali.” When foreign tourists are welcome again, according to Koster, depends on how the situation develops.

More than 155,000 corona infections have been reported in Indonesia and 6,759 people infected with the virus have died, the highest death toll in Southeast Asia. In Bali, 4,000 people became infected and 49 infected people died.

Tourism is the main source of income in Bali and closing the borders is a hammer blow to the island’s economy. The occupancy rate of star hotels dropped to just 2 percent in May.

Domestic tourism is allowed again from July 31. The island has since attracted about 2,500 domestic tourists.
