Bali Will Have Train Without Rail

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

PT KAI (Persero) admitted that he was reviewing the development plan train without rail (Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit / ART) with the Provincial Government (Pemprov) Bali and private investors.

President Director of KAI, Didiek Hartantyo, said that the development initiated by the Bali Provincial Government for tourism purposes is still in the design process.

Later, ART will be built from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali to the Sanur area to accommodate the needs of tourists.

Even though they do not have a completion target, development is included in the 2020-2024 national medium-term development plan (RPJMN).

“Indeed, there is already a discussion between PT KAI and the Bali Provincial Government on which plans to build a train from the airport to Sanur. (We) are conducting studies with local governments and investors,” said Didiek, Tuesday (11/8).

ART is considered to be the most appropriate mass transportation because it can be operated on the highway using a signal system. In addition, investment is cheaper than railroad construction.

“In terms of investment, it is cheaper and the execution is faster,” continued Didiek.

On the same occasion, the Director General of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation, Zulfikri, said that the development plan would connect South and North Bali to support the needs of the Island of the Gods, which is the foundation of national tourism.

He said that the government was indeed aggressively building mass transportation outside Java. He said Bali was one of the provinces that met several development eligibility requirements, such as the number of passengers and interest in investment.

Zulfikri said railroad construction often stalled because the calculations did not meet the requirements of investors’ profits. Moreover, the amount of investment required is fantastic.

“There are initiatives because the tourism potential is so great. This is still in the design and planning stage connecting south and north Bali,” he concluded.
