Larian Studios has announced that the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC has been pushed back to August 3, 2023, nearly a month ahead of its previously announced August 31 release date. The PS5 version, on the other hand, has been pushed back to September 6th, so thankfully it’s just an extra week of waiting for console gamers.

There was also a list of details that certainly sounded very interesting, indicating that Baldur’s Gate 3 is going to be a very, very big game.

The script for Baldur’s Gate 3 contains more dialogue than three of the three Lord of the Rings books combined, with over 2 million words. Over 170 hours of cinematic scenes, twice the length of all seasons of Game of Thrones combined. 7 playable protagonists, each with their own rich history, personality, desires and goals, plus a best-in-class character creation system to create your own characters. Play as one of 11 playable races and 31 sub-races, with multiple body types 12 classes and 46 sub-classes, compared to Divinity: Original Sin 2 there were 10 “spell schools”. Over 600 spells and actions compared to Divinity: Original Sin 2 – 225 spells and player actions.

Publishing director Michael Daus promised that the game would reach 60 FPS on PS5.

We have always been a studio that strives to release the game on as many platforms as possible in order of completion. We also strived for the highest possible quality on every platform we went out on. We’re now at 60fps on the PlayStation 5, which is amazing given the breadth and depth of Baldur’s Gate 3. There are over 170 hours of cinematic footage in the game, more than double the length of the entire Game of Thrones and more than three times the number of dialogues in all three Lord of the Rings novels combined. It’s a huge, massive game that truly brings D&D to life, with multiplayer and split-screen co-op, about 4x the scale of our previous game, Divinity: Original Sin 2. Achieving a technical bar that matched our design ambitions seemed the right move, while delaying the PC version when we knew we’d be ready seemed like the wrong move in such a busy launch period.

Further details about Baldur’s Gate 3 will be revealed on July 7 during the live Panel From Hell: Release Showcase.
