Bail set for adolescent mother accused of capital murder – Telemundo El Paso (48)

EL PASO, Texas – The woman arrested as the prime suspect in the death of her own 7-month-old baby was posted on $ 800,000 bond this afternoon.

It is about 19-year-old Johnette Dukes, who reported that she woke up from a nap and found her son missing.

According to an affidavit, Dukes said he had tied the baby in a car seat inside the home before taking a nap.

Attached to the statement is the testimony of a Dukes friend who occasionally cared for the baby.

She said that the baby “did not know how to walk and was just learning to crawl” so authorities emphasize that the child “could not act on his own.”

The events occurred last Saturday, May 8, when agents with EPPD responded to reports of a missing child at 3607 Johnson Avenue.

Officers began an immediate search for the minor in and around the residence and found him inside a laundry basket under a stacked set of clothing.

Officers immediately administered CPR, but the baby was later declared dead at the hospital where he had been transported.

Furthermore, the documents establish that the mother showed little interest in her son.

“Dukes showed lack of emotion, lack of interest in questions when the baby was found,” the report reads.

The Medical Examiner ruled that the cause of death was suffocation as a factor.

The mother was arrested on May 14, on charges of capital murder. She is being held at the El Paso County Detention Center.

According to authorities, the investigation is ongoing.
