Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Health appeals to nursing homes because of the low corona “booster” rate – Baden-Württemberg

Stuttgart. In the old people’s and nursing homes in Baden-Württemberg, far fewer people have received a booster vaccination than had been hoped. According to an evaluation by the State Health Office (LGA) for the Ministry of Social Affairs, one in three residents did not have a so-called booster vaccination at the end of the year. Since the rate of those who were vaccinated for the third time was only 68 percent, Minister of Social Affairs and Health Manne Lucha (Greens) appealed to the institutions to make better use of the vaccination offers. “Everyone who is still hesitant and undecided that we can recruit for vaccination is worth the effort, in my opinion,” he said. According to media reports, the rate of boosters in the homes in Rhineland-Palatinate was 85 percent.

Recently, a case in a Rastatt retirement home with 13 dead caused a stir. According to the district office, none of them had a booster vaccination. Some were never vaccinated, others once or twice.

According to Luchas, the number of reports of deaths in old people’s and nursing homes in Baden-Württemberg has increased. Most of them are not or not fully vaccinated against Covid-19, Lucha argued in a letter to the facilities. According to the LGA, the proportion of employees who received a booster was significantly lower than that of residents: only slightly more than every third employee (37 percent) has received a booster vaccination to date. First, the SWR reported on the minister’s appeal.

39 corona outbreaks in retirement homes since mid-December

According to information from the Ministry of Health and the LGA on Wednesday, 39 corona outbreaks with a total of 411 cases from inpatient geriatric care facilities have been transmitted to the state health authority in Baden-Württemberg since mid-December 2021. 21 residents died from or in connection with the virus.

The ministry can only speculate on the reasons for the quota. “It is conceivable, for example, to have acute illnesses associated with longer hospital stays or a deterioration in the general condition and personal rejections,” said the ministry. Above all, it is important that all those who want to be vaccinated in the facilities receive a vaccination offer. “The necessary vaccine is available in sufficient numbers,” emphasized Lucha.

With a view to the numbers, SPD parliamentary group leader Andreas Stoch called for “sending all available mobile vaccination teams to the nursing homes and protecting our most vulnerable immediately from the omicron wave”. It is incomprehensible that currently every third person living in nursing homes is not protected with a booster vaccination.

For the survey, the LGA included data from 1,495 facilities in the evaluation of the vaccination rate among employees and 1,532 in the evaluation of the rate of those cared for. According to this, of the 82,648 people cared for, 75,375 (91.2 percent) had complete basic protection, which is usually achieved with the second vaccination, but is not sufficient against the omicron variant, for example; among employees it was 72,115 or 81.6 percent. However, these values - even with the booster vaccination – were above the quotas in the entire population, the office said. Just over 11,000 or 12.5 percent of employees are not vaccinated.
