Baden-Wrttemberg: Floods keep Baden-Wrttemberg in suspense: Among other things, shipping on the Rhine near Karlsruhe is suspended, many cities are expecting flooding

On Saturday morning the Rhine had a water level of more than 8 meters. The experts expect that the water in Maxau will rise to 8.30 meters by Saturday evening.

In addition, the thaw until Saturday morning had caused widespread high water levels, especially in the south of Baden-Wrttemberg. According to the HVZ, the levels in many places rose to a range that, statistically speaking, is reached once every two years. In Meckenbeuren in the Lake Constance district, the Schussen rose to almost 4.50 meters – a water level that, on average, only occurs every 20 to 50 years.

Flood flows over the Danube – snow comes back

The Danube is also affected by the flood, because the flood caused by the snowmelt and rain is expected to drain over the second largest river in Europe at the weekend. Therefore, the cities of Regensburg, Straubing, Deggendorf and Passau are preparing for possible flooding.

Major flooding in the towns was not initially expected. The Bavarian flood intelligence service warned: “For the Danube forecast, however, the further development of the tributaries remains to be seen.”

In addition, people in Bavaria have to reckon with cold weather in some areas at the weekend. The rain is increasingly turning into snow again, said the German Weather Service. Sturmben were also announced. There was a storm warning for the edge of the Alps. By Sunday, the amount of water due to rain and melting snow should add up to 100 to 180 liters per square meter.

On Friday, small streams and rivers were already overflowing in many regions. Floods occurred particularly in Lower and Central Franconia. Flood warning levels one and two were often reached. With such flooding, however, mostly only fields or roads are flooded. Occasionally, however, the water also rose above level three or in some cases even above the highest level four.
