Bad breath, dry mouth can be a sign of diabetes

Many people have type 2 diabetes for years without realizing it.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Diabetes is often dubbed the silent killer because it is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. Referring to IDF data in 2021, the number of deaths caused by diabetes in Indonesia reached 236,711. This number increased by 58 percent when compared to 149,872 in 2011.

Not only Indonesia, developed countries like the UK also face a similar problem in terms of diabetes. There are currently nearly four million people with diabetes in the UK, but an estimated 500,000 people do not know they have diabetes.

The lift was released by the Diabetes and Wellness Foundation, which also states that nine out of every ten people with diabetes have type 2 which in some cases is preventable. Type 2 diabetes can lead to a variety of serious health complications, such as heart disease or stroke.

The Liverpool Echo reports that high blood sugar can lead to diabetes, and if a person has high blood sugar for a long time, it can also result in permanent damage to parts of the body such as the eyes, nerves, kidneys and blood vessels.

Two common symptoms of high blood sugar, also known as hyperglycemia, occur in the mouth. This includes dry mouth and smelly breath.

Other warning signs including increased thirst, urinating more frequently, fatigue, blurred vision, and unintentional weight loss can also be warning signs.

Due to symptoms hyperglycemia it can also be caused by undiagnosed diabetes, experts in the UK’s NHS advise seeing a doctor immediately if you experience any of these two symptoms.

“Many people have type 2 diabetes for years without realizing it because the initial symptoms tend to be common,” the NHS said in a statement Daily Record, Sunday (10/4/2022).
