Back to online classes

Written in OPINION the

Like a glove fell the recoil in the epidemiological traffic light in Mexico City to yellow for the educational community, which returned to face-to-face classes on June 7, since on Friday the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) announced two more cases of students infected with covid-19, for a total -so far- of eight.

As of today the schools, public and private of basic education, will close its doors again to return to online classes, as stipulated by the federal Ministry of Education, although the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this weekend that continuing in face-to-face classes will be for the consideration of the school population, because, despite the yellow color, the activities in CDMX will continue to be open.

Be that as it may, it is a relief for teachers, students and parents, who after the recent cases of covid began to be alerted, so that, now, the return to face-to-face classes could take place until August, when the next school year begins, as long as the city keeps it green.

Another point to highlight about what happened this week in the educational field is the preliminary draft that the SEP sent to the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (Conamer) on how to instruct teachers to qualify in this cycle to students of public basic education, in addition to establishing a minimum grade of six, and in the case of students who do not have a record, the legend “No information“, In order to be able to contact them and regularize them before considering that they repeat the year.

Furthermore, it stipulates that no teacher may retain students for the school year in turn, until there is first an extraordinary valuation process. I mean, They will help them to pass grade yes or yes.

On the part of returning to online classes, it is the best that could be done in order to establish true hygiene and care protocols that offer greater security to the educational community about a true return to the classroom in August, since these eight cases of infected children tell us that things are not being done correctly in schools and that the supervision of the authority must be stricter.

Regarding the qualifications, it must be remembered that since last year it had been established do not fail public basic education students, nothing more than now will not be done with those who have not taken classes during the pandemic, but will seek to regularize them.

The fight against the coronavirus is not over yet, lowering our guard implies that we will lose more and more before the epidemiological traffic light, so it is urgent to continue with the mandatory use of face masks, keep a healthy distance and wash hands more than 20 times a day or use antibacterial gel constantly; everything depends on this, mainly the education of our children.

SYNCHRONY: There are 114 million students absent from classrooms in Latin America and the Caribbean; the largest number of children outside the classroom in the world (Unicef).
