Back to class. IMSS gives advice to take care of the health of students

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) recommended that parents whose children will return to the new school year virtually have a ergonomic chair to avoid posture problems, headaches, neck, shoulders, lower back.

Antonio Rosales Piñón, Head of the Coverage Expansion Area of the Health Promotion Division, added that the television and computer must be installed in a common use area, where they can observe and supervise their children.

Minors must avoid working for long periods in front of the screen as it can cause visual fatigue, therefore it is necessary to use protectors, screen filters or lenses that avoid the reflections of natural or artificial light

Equally, take 10-minute breaks for every hour of work, time in which you should look into the distance (at a distance of approximately 6 meters) to relax the eye muscles.

Spending several hours in front of the screen can cause dry eyes, tearing, red eyes and headache. These discomforts can be reduced by taking care of the distance from the monitor, as well as the angle of work and lighting.

On the other hand, Rosales Piñón stressed that taking virtual classes at home it is a good opportunity to improve access and consumption of food rich in nutrients.

It is recommended to have a healthy variety that includes, for example, cucumber, jicama, apples, strawberries, grapes, oranges, preferably those that are in season, in addition to water.

You can also have low-fat yogurt, tuna and sliced cheese, among others, and avoid industrialized foods rich in sugar and fat.

The IMSS specialist stressed that in this modality of virtual classes the parents will have to change their work routines and childcare to support them in online activities.

“Parents, teachers and children are learning this together, so patience is essential.”

He stressed that it is advisable to start slowly to adapt and become familiar little by little, until the new modality is manageable by minors.

Now that the children are at home more time, Rosales Piñón said that according to the spaces in the home, dancing is suggested as a physical activity and that they listen to music of their liking; jump rope, play airplane, active video games, or online exercise classes.
