Axel Witsel (35) was the player at Signal Iduna Park who took his post next to Atlético coach Diego Simeone for the press conference for the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Logically, Witsel – dressed in a suit for the occasion – played football there for four years, until he moved to Atlético in the summer of 2022.

“I played football for Dortmund for four years when I returned from China,” said Witsel. “The first two years were great. But then unfortunately I got injured. I will always have a deep affection for Dortmund and everyone involved with the club. Myself and my family have had four wonderful years here.”

“The atmosphere in Dortmund is fiery, just like in our Metropolitano stadium. We know it won’t be an easy match. We have to bring the same intensity as last week in the first half. That will be crucial. The first fifteen to twenty minutes are important, then the tone is set. Furthermore, details are important in these types of competitions. It’s not like I can give my teammates tips. We have an experienced group that is ready for these types of competitions. Everyone knows what it’s like to play in Dortmund.”

Atlético took a 2-0 lead in the first leg, but swallowed the 2-1, making everything still playable.
