Award-winning film about Guantánamo detainees starts – dpa

MThe Bremen Film Festival was opened with the award-winning film “Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush”. Andreas Dresen’s strip received two awards at the Berlinale. The film tells the story of Murat Kurnaz from Bremen, who was held for years in the US prison camp in Guantánamo, Cuba, from his mother’s perspective. The film’s main actors, director and members of the Kurnaz family attended the premiere on Thursday evening, according to a festival spokeswoman.

The festival started on Wednesday evening with a short film competition. Interested parties can watch the films from the cinema seat or online. “We are pleased that we are now back in the cinema after a digital and an open-air version,” said the director of the film festival, Matthias Greving. At the “Klappe” short film competition, more than 30 almost three-minute films on the subject of “Seven Lives” are to be shown.

A total of around 200 films from 38 countries will be shown in Bremen cinemas until April 24, and online until the beginning of May. Topics include Ukraine and sustainability.
