Aviation sector wants to lift ‘unnecessary and inefficient’ travel restrictions | Abroad

Airports and airlines are calling on European countries to lift travel restrictions introduced due to the rise of the omikron variant. Countries should follow guidelines from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which stated on Wednesday that travel restrictions are no longer helpful in spreading the omikron variant, as it is now mainly spread within communities.

In a joint press release, the European Association of Airports ACI Europe and the Association of European Airlines A4E are calling on countries such as France, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom to lift travel restrictions to countries where the omikron variant is already circulating.

“ECDC has always been clear that travel restrictions can only limit the introduction of new variants and that they are of no use once the variant has spread across Europe,” said Olivier Jankovec of ACI Europe and Thomas Reynaert of A4E in the communication.

“Coordination and coherence”

Travel restrictions such as quarantines or the testing obligation for vaccinated persons are mainly a thorn in the side of the travel industry, while governments would do better to limit infections within local communities, the statement also says.

Finally, according to the companies, the restrictions lead to the European corona certificate losing its value. “Efficient coordination and coherence must be promoted not only within the EU, but also at a pan-European level,” conclude the two organizations.
