Rarely has a long-haul flight brought together so many ministers and big bosses from the oil and air sectors. They are proud to pose at the foot of the plane in question. What makes it special is that it will connect Canada with a fuel made up of 16% frying oil. Anne Rigail, CEO of Air France, explains that the fuel comes mainly from used oil. “These 16% will allow us to reduce CO2 emissions by around 15%,” she added. A first, especially since this biofuel is 100% French. To obtain it, it was necessary to collect used oils from fast food restaurants. Then treat them with hydrogen to make them more resistant. The other particularity is its price. It costs four times more to produce and it is the passenger who will have to pay. For a Paris-Montreal flight for example, count four euros in addition to the cost of the current ticket. More expensive in the name of the environment, the initiative does not suit some environmental organizations. In one of the most polluting sectors, the challenge is therefore to find other levers. Hydrogen-powered planes are under study. The goal is to drastically reduce carbon emissions by 2050.
