Average number of infections climbs to 568 people per day

An average of 567.9 people were infected between July 29 and August 4, Sciensano reports. This increases the average number of infections by 25 percent.

An average of 22.1 people a day are now hospitalized with covid-19, a slight decrease of four percent. An average of 3.1 corona patients die per day, which is an increase of 22 percent on a weekly basis.

On Monday August 3 and Tuesday August 4, particularly high daily figures were counted, 767 and 763 infections respectively. These are the highest daily figures since the end of April. 516 infections have now been reported for August 5, but that number may increase if Sciensano is able to further verify the number.

The health institute estimates the reproduction number at 1,159. This means that the epidemic is still growing: a hundred infected people infect an average of 116 others. Sciensano estimates this from hospital admissions, making it lower than other reproduction numbers. Last Saturday, that number was still at 1.107.

In total, there are 72,784 known coronavirus infections in our country. The largest number of infections, with 12,776 cases, is still in Antwerp, followed by 8,017 known cases in Liège. 18,414 patients were hospitalized. 9,866 corona patients died from the effects of the corona virus.

On Friday afternoon, virologist Steven Van Gucht gave more information on the figures at a press conference of the Crisis Center.
