The first strong autumn storm is building up in Lower Saxony. According to weather forecasts, today Tief “Ignatz” will initially hit the Harz Mountains, tomorrow the North Sea coast and the islands.

A strong current from the southwest ensures stormy weather in the south of the country during the day. Strong gusts are expected, especially in the highest locations in the Harz, as a spokesman for the German Weather Service (DWD) said in the morning. Meteorologists expect gusts of wind on the Brocken. On Thursday evening the situation calmed down briefly, as from Thursday morning gusts of wind are again expected in the Harz region and gusts of wind in the Brocken.

A slight storm surge is expected on the North Sea coast

On the coast there is a risk of a light storm surge in the morning from midday floods and floods at night. With storm gusts up to a force of 10 from the west and northwest, the tide can accumulate approximately one meter higher than the mean tide. The beaches and headland can be flooded, as announced in the north by the storm surge warning service of the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Conservation and Nature (NLWNK).

East Frisians prepared for autumn storms

Light storm surges are nothing unusual in fall and winter, emphasized NLWKN spokesperson Carsten Lippe. Tourism and health establishments along the coast prepared for the storm surge season, as did the Coast Guard. The East Frisian fire brigades also look well prepared for the first autumn storm.
