Autumn foliage map released in Central Park – NBC New York

NEW YORK – Several weeks after fall, the leaves are finally starting to peak in New York City.

Although months of record temperatures and droughts dried up parts of the northeast last summer, leaf watchers in the Big Apple shouldn’t worry about missing out on the colorful views Mother Nature offers this fall season.

Some of the best views of fall foliage are found in Central Park, with trees transforming a symphony of reds, oranges, and yellows.

Central Park Conservation, a non-profit organization that cares about the park’s daily maintenance, reported that the leaves are starting to peak and released a new interactive map to track when and where to locate the best views.

The new Conservancy map plots the foliage peak in real time throughout the iconic park, showing which sections are about to peak, which are currently peaking, and which have already peaked.

When will fall foliage peak in Central Park?

While some national fall foliage maps predict that parts of New York may already have peaked between October 10 and 17, Central Park’s trees tend to do so later than the rest of the state.

Conservation claims that the delayed peak is caused by the angles of the city’s sunrises and sunsets.

“This has a unique effect on Central Park’s trees, which are often obscured by many shadows cast by surrounding buildings.” said the conservation organization. “As a result of the gradient of light and temperature, trees often have a distorted sense of the seasons, which means that Central Park often experiences a subsequent change in foliage compared to other parts of New York.”

Some parts of Central Park may have already begun to peak, according to the guardianship, while other parts have not yet.
