Now it’s all about winning the tournament in Oeiras against the other group winners. Sinja Kraus, who had given Austria the lead against Nagy (WTA No. 742), secured the 2-1 with partner Melanie Klaffner after Julia Grabher’s defeat (1:6, 3:6 against Natalia Szabanin, No. 601). After a 1:6, Kraus-Klaffner turned the match against Nagy-Szabanin 6:1 and 10:5 in the champions tiebreak.

SOCCER: Women’s European Championship qualification. After the bitter 2:3 home defeat against Germany, Austria preserved their direct chance of qualifying with a 3:1 win against the Poles, who were still pointless. The away game was on a knife edge in the end as Poland pushed for an equalizer at 1-2, but Eileen Campbell made it 3-1 with a counter-attack goal. The playoff is now against Iceland (also 3 points from 2 games).
SKI. Austrian Championships, Downhill, Reiteralm: Otmar Striedinger won ahead of Danklmaier, Matteo Haas and Eichberger. – Women: Young hopeful Len Wechner won ahead of Ricarda Haas, Emily Schöpf and Christina Ager. Raedler and Puchner were eliminated.
International German Ski Championships in Pfelders, South Tyrol: Super G: With Bayern’s Simon Jocher winning again, Johannes Strolz was the best Austrian in 8th place, while Kilian Pramstaller, the second best Austrian, couldn’t get past 22nd place.
