Sports competitions warm the hearts and cause a lot of emotions, not only among athletes but also among the fans. Social media offers the opportunity to get rid of pent-up frustration quickly and easily at the push of a button and to share it with the world permanently.

A circumstance that the information platform Wettfreunde (www.wettfreunde.net) took advantage of as part of a comparison on Twitter to find out which players and clubs are arousing the most enthusiasm on the Internet.

To this end, about 15,000 tweets relating to 78 terms with negative connotations were analyzed in combination with the names of a total of 346 professionals from the top-flight Austrian men’s football.

The number of insults was compared with the total number of tweets (at least 30 or more) per person.

Altach professional at the top of the most offended players

SCR Altach’s Noah Bischof finishes in infamous 1st place on the exam. The 19-year-old center-forward, who made a total of 23 appearances last season after making his pro debut on Matchday 1, is 7.3 percent tweets analyzed associated with negative terms.

19-year-old Hannes Küng (6.9%) of SC Austria Lustenau finished second, although the center-back hasn’t played a game this season and has only been in the squad against RB Salzburg.

Fans also expressed their dissatisfaction with SK Austria Klagenfurt’s Emilian Metu: the FC Bayern loan midfielder is insulted in 6.7% of all tweets and was only allowed to pick up 2 modest minutes of play in this season.

Two Salzburg Red Bulls players complete the top five. RB pros Ignace Van der Brempt and Philipp Köhn score 4.9 and 4.8 percentage points respectively.

The Salzburg Red Bulls, generally insulted by football romantics and traditionalists, are only in fifth place with 1.6%.

“Almans” in Austria

The creativity of the football fan scene is widely known and is regularly showcased, including through songs and choreography. As a result, followers can also come up with something when dealing with frustration in social networks.

Among the large number of words with which fans can express their displeasure towards football professionals, users have more frequently chosen the term “Alman”. The term for German clichés can be found in 24 tweets.

Nobody, on the other hand, is called “Kartoffel” or “Piefke”. The term “amateur” is the second most common insult, with 21 mentions. Third place was shared by “Alki” and “Affe” with 20 hits each.
