Australia is plagued by floods, another 20,000 people will be evacuated

“Nothing is definitely over, don’t be complacent,” warned New South Wales Governor Dominic Perrottet on Tuesday. He urged people to be especially careful when traveling by car due to the risk of flash flooding.

In some places, more rain fell in three days than Australia averages for the whole year. There is a more favorable forecast for Tuesday, however, there is still a risk of river flooding, as their beds were already almost full before the arrival of the current torrential rains.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported that in the central and northern parts of the coast of New South Wales in six hours it could rain 90 millimeters, in some places even 125 millimeters.

Downpours can accompany wind gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour, increasing the risk of downed trees or power lines. Authorities have urged Sydney residents not to go out unless absolutely necessary.

The federal government on Monday declared the floods a natural disaster, helping affected people get support from emergency funds.

The town of Windsor, northwest of Sydney, is experiencing high water for the third time this year, this time the worst flooding. People on social networks publish photos of flooded roads and bridges, or rescuers helping motorists with their cars stuck in water.
