Auschwitz Memorial director wants to take over a month’s imprisonment from Nigerian boy

Omar Farouq is 13 and lives in Kano, a state in the northwest of the African country. It is one of the 12 states where Sharia applies. Islamic courts can rule on religious and secular matters, but they can only try Muslims. Omar allegedly insulted Allah in a discussion with another boy. He was sentenced to ten years in prison. His family’s lawyer is appealing, but no date has been set yet. The UN Children’s Rights Organization UNICEF calls it a violation of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child and demands his immediate release.
