Aung San Suu Kyi party again wins absolute majority in Myanmar

The party of leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is heading for a very big victory in the elections in Myanmar. With 64 seats to be allocated, it is already clear that the party will have an absolute majority in parliament.

This requires 322 seats and Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy already stands at 346 seats. Five years ago, with comparable figures, the party won the first free elections since the military junta gave up some of its power.

The current elections were seen as a referendum for Aung San Suu Kyi. She is very popular domestically, but abroad she has suffered dents in her reputation after allegations of genocide against the country’s Muslim minority, the Rohingya.

According to domestic and foreign observers, the elections in Myanmar were fair. The main opposition party believes that this is not the case and is demanding new elections. The military, who still have a lot of power in Myanmar, called the elections successful.
