On Monday, Austrian government representatives should have met with the Lufthansa board of directors to discuss the topic of state aid for Austrian Airlines. It was nothing for the time being: The meeting was postponed from Austria to mid-week, as “DerStandard” reported. According to the report, the experts should not agree on how Lufthansa State aid would be secured – as reported, there are various variants of location guarantees up to the state’s participation in the airline in the room.
It is interesting that, according to the article, the entry of the Austrian state into Lufthansa itself is now under discussion – especially if the German state in turn takes over shares in the AUA mother. “In this way you would really get influence and protection,” an expert from Cofag (COVID-19 financing agency of the federal government) is quoted by the newspaper.
In any case, it can be assumed that the Austrian state will take a very critical look at state aid for Austrian Airlines – and will take its time accordingly. The emergency nationalization of Hypo Alpe Adria is likely to have remained poorly remembered in this regard – one will definitely try to avoid such a debacle.
