Attack on rabbi’s residence near New York “terrorist act”

“We have some significant hate-motivated crimes that we’re fighting, but I think we’re beyond that now. I think it is a terrorist act. I think it’s domestic terrorism. They want to impose fear. They are motivated by hatred, ”he told reporters on arrival on Sunday morning.

In Israel, President Reuven Rivlin said he was “shocked and outraged” after the attack.

“The rise of anti-Semitism is not just a Jewish problem and certainly not just the problem of the State of Israel,” he said in a statement. “We must work together to fight this evil which is raising its head again and posing a real threat across the world.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for his part, “strongly condemned the recent manifestations of anti-Semitism”.

America’s Jewish community, some estimate more than 5 million strong, is increasingly the target of attacks.

In a report published in April, the Anti-Defamation League, an organization fighting against racism and anti-Semitism, counted 1,879 anti-Semitic incidents in 2018, approaching the record of 1986 in 2017, and including 39 physical assaults, the double from the previous year.
