AT&T Network Outage Leaves Customers Unable to Make Calls, Text, or Access Internet

The cause of the AT&T network outage remains unknown

An AT&T network outage left many of its customers in the United States unable to place calls, send texts, or access the internet on Thursday morning. Although the company stated that most of its network had been restored by late morning, the cause of the outage remains a mystery. The Federal Communications Commission has confirmed that it is investigating the incident, while the White House has stated that federal agencies are in touch with AT&T to gather more information on the interruptions.

What can you do if you have no service?

If you are an AT&T customer experiencing service interruptions, you can turn on Wi-Fi calling to make calls and send texts if you have access to Wi-Fi. Setting up Wi-Fi calling is easy: iPhone users should tap on “Cellular” in the Settings app, while Android users should click on “Connection” and then turn on the Wi-Fi calling feature. AT&T has stated that there is no additional cost to use this feature, and it works automatically when connected to a chosen Wi-Fi network.

According to reports, more than 74,000 AT&T customers experienced outages, with disruptions starting around 4 am ET on Thursday. The number of reported outages decreased throughout the morning, with fewer than 5,000 customers still reporting issues by the afternoon.

AT&T acknowledged the widespread outage but did not provide a reason for the system failure. The company stated that its network teams had taken immediate action to restore service and that three-quarters of the network was back online by late morning. However, there is still no timeframe for when the system will be fully restored.

AT&T’s stock fell more than 2% on Thursday, while Verizon and T-Mobile customers reported fewer network outages.

Verizon and T-Mobile say they’re unaffected

Unlike AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile reported no significant issues and stated that their networks were operating normally. There were about 1,000 reported outages from both Verizon and T-Mobile customers, but they were primarily experiencing difficulties when calling or texting customers served by other carriers. Downdetector, a website that provides real-time status information, was observing status updates from over 12,000 services across 47 countries.

This is a developing story, and both the FCC and various Federal agencies are actively investigating the AT&T network outage. More updates will be provided as the situation develops.
