ATP Cup: Hubert Hurkacz died in a murderous clash!

The Biało-Czerwoni led by Marcin Matkowski are doing very well on the courts in Sydney. They advanced to the semi-finals with a full set of victories. On Wednesday, the Poles defeated Argentina, and Hurkacz himself dealt with Diego Schwartzman in great style, winning 6: 1 and 6: 4.

– I played a very good match today. I tried to play solidly at the end of the court and then take the initiative. I am glad how this match turned out. I am proud of Kamil (Majchrzak, editor’s note). He presented himself splendidly. It was his greatest victory. He played a phenomenal match. Especially after it was broken off, it came back and was positive all the time. A great victory for Poland and we are eager to win in the semi-finals – said Hurkacz in an interview with Onet Sport.

The Wrocław player knew that only a victory with Bautista-Agut would allow the Poles to keep a chance to advance to the finals. In the first Friday duel, Jan Zieliński lost to Pablo Carreno-Busta (2: 6, 1: 6). The 25-year-old replaced Kamil Majchrzak, who obtained a positive test for COVID-19.

From the beginning, the 24-year-old’s match with the nine-year-old Spaniard was even. Buatista-Agut broke the Pole in the third game, fortunately Hurkacz made up for the losses in the eighth game and also won the Spaniard’s service, which is currently ranked 19th in the ATP ranking, for comparison the Pole is in the 9th place. The tie-break decided about the fate of the first set. This is the third tie-break in the history of the duels of both players, in the past it was won twice by a Spaniard.

Hurkacz started with a service ace. Then he made a mini-break, and he scored the third point in this phase of the game after an ace, interestingly after the second serve. The ace also gave him a fourth point in the tie-break, the Spaniard looking helpless. The experienced tennis player managed to get up and after an emotional ending, he won the first set.

Hurkacz did not give up his arms and broke the Spaniard in the first game of the second set. Ultimately, he dominated the rival and led to the third set. The Wrocław player was especially impressive in the service field, which the 33-year-old could not cope with completely. If only the Pole hit the court in the first pass, the Spaniard could only spread his hands. Both players successfully defended their site. Seta was started by Bautista-Agut, thanks to which he had a slight psychological advantage. It was evident in the tenth game in which he inflicted blood on the Pole. Finally, after a dramatic fight, another tie-break awaited both players. Unfortunately, the Spaniard who won the war of nerves turned out to be better at it.

A doubles match will not change the situation of Poles. The Spaniards will play in the grand finale.

Hubert Hurkacz – Roberto Bautista-Agut 6: 7 (6: 8), 6: 2, 6: 7 (5: 7)
