Atmo Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes takes stock of summer pollution

The summer season is coming to an end and the latter will become one of the hottest in the period 1900-2022. Heat and sunlight are usually favorable factors for the formation of ozone, a summer pollutant resulting from the chemical transformation of compounds emitted by human activities, under the effect of solar radiation.

The concentrations of ozone measured in 2022 are increasing compared to the last two years marked by Covid, without however leading to the observation of large-scale pollution episodes in the region, in terms of intensity or persistence. The departments most affected were the Rhone, Drôme and Ardèche.

Air quality was regularly described as poor in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes between June and August 2022,
in particular in the Lyon basin north of the Isère, Drôme / Ardèche and west of the Ain. However, this qualifier does not necessarily require the activation of pollution surveillance systems or prefectoral or warning information.
