Atlético has changed, but remains the same

Jakarta

Liverpool realize Atletico Madrid game has changed. But Jürgen Klopp reminds them they’re still just as savage.

Liverpool visit Atletico Madrid headquarters, Wednesday (20/10/2021) early morning WIB on Matchday 3 Champions League. ‘The Reds’ will next turn to host Atletico at Anfield on Matchday 4, so these two meetings will be crucial in their chances of qualifying quickly.

However Atletico Madrid never an easy opponent. Mohamed Salah et al lost home and away in the last 16 of the 2019/2020 season, lost 0-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano and then lost 2-3 at Anfield.

Manager Liverpool Jürgen Klopp until he was annoyed with Atletico at that time, highlighting his opponent’s playing style which was indeed very defensive. But this time Atletico came armed with a different approach.

Since the 2020/2021 season, Atlético Madrid has begun to apply a different style of play with the basic pattern of three defenders. This pattern allows The Colchoneros control the ball more and push the opponent in his area.

That pattern also led them to the LaLiga title last season.

“They played a different system, underwent a lot of player changes. So we faced a different beast, but not weaker than before,” said Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s official website.

“They won Spain last season, it’s not an easy thing to do. Some of the core aspects of the players are still there, so they know how to win games and that’s what they will try to do tomorrow.”
