Nothing can stop Ajla Del Ponte. The Swiss sprinter confirmed Sunday in Stockholm by winning the 100 meters in the Diamond League for the second time. With a time of 11”20, she beat the Dutch Marije van Hunenstijn by eight hundredths and the Ivorian world medalist Marie-Josée Ta Lou by 12 hundredths.
This is the third consecutive victory for the one who is still studying at the University of Lausanne, after Monaco (August 14) and Bydgoszcz (Poland) last Wednesday.
Sprunger beaten over 400 meters hurdles
For his part, Lea Sprunger is gradually finding her marks on the international scene. Braked by an Achilles heel injury, the Vaudoise has could reconnect with the Diamond League on Sunday in Stockholm. The European 400 champion meters hurdles took the 6th place in 56”40. His training partner, the young Femke Bol (20 years), flew to victory (54”68). The Dutchwoman relegated her rivals to more than half a second.
Nice performance by Wicki
Silvan Wicki performed well over 200 meters. The Argovian finished third in the 200 meters, won by Briton Adam Gemili.
For a long time fourth in the 800 meters, Selina Büchel was passed by the German Christina Hering and the British Alexandra Bell. The Swiss 800-meter record holder had to settle for sixth place in a race won by Britain’s Jemma Reekie.
Warholm nears the world record
An error on the last hurdle probably cost the world record in the 400m hurdles to the Norwegian Karsten Warholm, author of the 2nd best performance of all time (46”87) in Stockholm.
The expressive Norwegian bit his fingers on the finish … Alone in the world, especially in a stadium empty of spectators, Karsten Warholm tumbled at full speed to lane eight, all outside in the final stretch of the 400m hurdles, hit the 10th and final hurdle, but kept pushing to reach the stratospheric time of 46 seconds 87.
