At the start of the year, Post Luxembourg sent more than half a million text messages and 168 terabytes of data

Have a good year! Luxembourg residents have been busy sending New Year’s greetings to their loved ones again this year, the Post said in a news release on Monday. As many as 653,234 text messages were sent on 31 December 2022 and 1 January 2023 via the Post Luxembourg mobile network. This is a 72% increase over the previous year. In addition to the SMS service, messengers such as Facebook or WhatsApp were also used to send greetings. A total of 168 terabytes of data were sent during the reporting period. Here, however, Swiss Post was only able to post a minimal growth of 1.8% compared to the previous year.

A table attached to the release also shows that the habits of Luxembourg residents have changed over the years. In 2018, at the turn of the year, 1.49 million text messages were sent, more than double the figure at the turn of 2022/23. On the other hand, messaging services have been used much less to send greetings. In 2018, “only” 50.2 terabytes of data were sent, not even a third of the amount in 2022/23. Since then, the volume of data sent has steadily increased year on year. With SMS greetings, it’s been quite the opposite: the number has steadily declined since 2018, with a low point at the turn of the year 2021/22 with a total of 379,300 messages.
