At the Saint-Joseph nursing home in Nantes, residents are waiting for the vaccine, their relatives a little less

The West-France of the day ragged next to the armchair, Jeanne, 85, made her decision on her own. She will get vaccinated : “I haven’t talked to my family about it. First, because I don’t see them often. I’m going to do it and then that’s it! Because you’ve seen all those who died? is maddening! “.

“Where do we do this on the shoulder?”

The vaccination campaign must officially begin this week of re-entry in Loire-Atlantique and Vendée. At the Saint-Joseph nursing home, this is already a topic of discussion: “Where do we do this on the shoulder?”, asks the resident, looking up at the director: “Will the nurses back home do it?” “We do not know yet”, answers Xavier Relandeau. He is worried about the number of things to organize until the first residents are vaccinated.

Frankly, I’m not going to fight with families. If they don’t want [le vaccin pour leur proche] it is their problem, they take their responsibilities.
– Isabelle Loirat, doctor

“The government and the ARS say that we are starting at the beginning of January, but we are awaiting documents presenting the vaccination from the Haute Autorité de Santé that we have not received. We also need to know if the liberal doctors will be sufficiently available to make the pre-vaccination consultations and to obtain the consent of the residents “, explains the director, who strives “to be ready for mid-January”.

The fear of endless discussions

The task that will take time will be the collection of consent. Some residents are not able to decide for themselves: “For those who do not have legal guardianship, it will be up to the family to decide”, explains Xavier Relandeau. “There; it will get complicated, if the children or the grandchildren do not agree with each other”. Yannick, for example. Come to visit a relative, he confesses his “skepticism” on the vaccine, “But it’s my sister who will decide, she’s the tutor. We haven’t talked about it yet, I don’t know what she will want”.

Isabelle Loirat, liberal doctor who follows several patients in Saint-Joseph, already warns that she do not plan to spend weeks convincing families : “Go and talk to people who are completely against the vaccine, frankly, I’m not going to fight with them. If they don’t want it, that’s their problem, they take responsibility for the health of their loved one”, annoys the doctor. For her, the important thing is that the vaccination finally begins.
