Travelers traveling into Britain from areas badly affected by corona must first stay in a quarantine hotel for ten days. Prime Minister Johnson stated in the House of Commons that this is necessary to stop new variants of the corona virus.
These are travelers from 22 countries on the red list, including South Africa, Portugal and countries in South America. The Netherlands is not on it. Travelers from these countries are no longer welcome in the UK. An exception applies to British and people with a residence permit. They are still allowed to enter the UK, but will soon be collected at the airport and immediately placed in quarantine.
“They are received by the government for ten days, in hotels, for example, with no exceptions,” Johnson said. Staying in such a hotel is at your own expense, to deter travelers. At the moment, travelers are still allowed to be quarantined at home.
According to British media there is still a lack of clarity about the measure; it is not clear, for example, when it should take effect and how many people it would potentially affect. A stay in such a quarantine hotel can cost hundreds or thousands of euros.
According to the opposition, the measure does not go far enough. He preferred that everyone who enters the country must be quarantined, not just those from the risk countries. “It is clear that we need to monitor our borders more strictly,” he said Labour-leider Keir Starmer Tuesday.

Yesterday, Britain passed the mark of 100,000 corona deaths. This means that the country has the most corona deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in the world.
Since the beginning of January, the country has been in a strict lockdown again. Johnson promised in the House of Commons to draw up a roadmap to get out of it, provided the vaccination program continues to run smoothly and no new variants of the corona virus appear.
