At least 40 dead in India cable-stayed bridge collapse – media

At least 40 people died and more than 100 are missing in the collapse of a cable-stayed bridge in the western state of Gujarat, India. He writes about it RIA Novosti with reference to the Odisha television channel.

The tragedy took place on the Morbi bridge over the Machchu River. It has been closed for the past two years and reopened after a renovation just a couple of days ago. According to the channel, there were more than 500 people, including children, at the time of the crossing. At least 350 Indian citizens ended up in the water.

According to the daily, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered to provide all necessary assistance, to allocate 200,000 rupees to the families of the dead, as well as 50,000 rupees to the wounded.

Local authorities said providing assistance is complicated by the strong current of the river, as well as at night. Rescuers on site.
