Dr. Gad Muhammad Al-Qadi, President of the National Institute of Astronomical and Geophysical Research, announced that the world will witness an annular eclipse of the sun on Sunday, June 21, at the end of the month of Shawwal and upon the conjunction of the month of Dhu al-Qiada for the year 1441 AH, which is the third phenomenon of the eclipse and eclipse during the year 2020 AD.

The judge clarified, in a statement today, Tuesday, that it can be seen as a partial eclipse in (southeastern Europe and the continent of Asia except northern and eastern Russia and northern Australia, and the continent of Africa except the southern and western part of it, Indonesia, Micronesia, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean), and is seen annularly in different regions in Each of (Congo, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Pakistan, India, China, South Sudan, Eritrea, Yemen, Oman), and at the height of the annular eclipse, the moon disk covers about 99% of the entire sun disk, indicating that the eclipse will take from its inception until its end for a period of approximately five hours and forty-eight minutes.

The head of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research continued: This eclipse is seen as a partial eclipse in Egypt and the Arab region, and it will be seen in Egypt for about two hours, where his vision begins at six minutes and 24 o’clock in the morning Cairo time, and its climax will be at 7:20 p.m. local time and when it covers the moon disk About 46% of the entire disk of the Sun. The partial eclipse ends in Cairo at 24:00.

The judge explained that the annular eclipse is a type of solar eclipse that usually occurs when the moon, during its menstrual cycle around the Earth, is in the converging phase at the end of the lunar month, and just before the birth of the new crescent, where the moon is located between the Earth and the sun, on the conjugation line, which is the line The linker between or near the center of the Earth and the Sun, and in its presence on or near one of the ascending or descending nodes.

The president of the National Institute of Astronomical and Geophysical Research continued: In these cases, the distance between the moon and the earth changes between 405 thousand km and 363 thousand km, and as a result of this change in the distance the size of the moon changes apparently for us. When it is soon, its size is large, covering the entire disk of the sun, and the total eclipse occurs, and when it is far away and coincides with its presence between the Earth and the sun, its size becomes smaller than the disk of the sun, so it does not cover it completely, but the moment of the height of the eclipse is sunlight surrounding the moon’s shadow, so a ring of sunlight appears to us. It is called an annular eclipse.

The judge indicated that the solar eclipse phenomenon is useful in confirming the beginnings of the Hijri (Lunar) months. As the solar eclipse occurs in conjunction or meeting, that is, the occurrence of the solar eclipse indicates the birth of the new crescent and the center of the eclipse is the date of the birth of the new moon.

The head of the National Institute of Astronomical and Geophysical Research stated that a research team from the institute will monitor and record the phenomenon using the solar telescope at the institute’s headquarters in Helwan and present it to the public. A number of special glasses will also be provided for amateurs to use in tracking the eclipse at the institute’s headquarters in Helwan, while the event will be broadcasted live through the institute’s webpage.

It is worth noting that the twenty-first century (between 2001-2100) will witness 224 solar eclipses, including 77 partial eclipses, 72 annular eclipses, 68 complete eclipses and 7 mixed eclipses, and the next annular eclipse will occur on June 10, 2021AD.

The institute warned citizens not to look directly at the sun during the eclipse period except through special glasses, wishing them to enjoy this astronomical phenomenon.
