Astrobotic Technology’s Peregrine Spacecraft Loses Signal During NASA Mission to the Moon

JAKARTA – Astrobotic Technology, a space robotics company, has lost Peregrine’s signal. This happened because Astrobotic’s artificial lander had entered a Loss of Signal period.

Before Peregrine left the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Deep Space Network network, Astrobotic had predicted that their spacecraft would experience a communications outage for 9 hours.

“At approximately 7 p.m., we will enter an estimated 9 hour Loss of Signal period, our longest period without communications. “We hope to be able to re-establish communication around 4 am,” Astrobotic said in an official statement.

Astrobotic did not explain the reasons behind the communications outage. They only explained that the company managed to collect data from some of the active payloads carried by Peregrine into space.

“We have successfully received data from nine payloads designed to communicate with the lander. “Ten loads that require power have received it, while the remaining ten loads are passive,” explained Astrobotic.

The ten Peregrine payloads that can transmit data are the Iris Lunar Rover, COLMENA, M-42 Radiation Detector, Linear Energy Transfer Spectrometer (LETS), Near-Infrared Volatile Spectometer System (NIRVSS), and Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS).

Furthermore, there is the Peregrine Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer (PITMS), Pocari Sweat’s Lunar Dream Time Capsule, Optical Precision Autonomous Landing (OPAL), and Navigation Doppler Lidar (NDL). Astrobotic did not explain the payloads for which they were unable to receive data.

Once Peregrine reconnects with NASA’s Deep Space Network, it won’t live long. The Peregrine had only 48 hours of propellant left and the craft was so far from the Moon’s path that its landing was already confirmed to be a failure.
