75 years ago, “Pippi Longstocking” by Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) was probably the most successful children’s book in the world. Shortly before the anniversary began, Lindgren’s daughter Karin Nyman (85) revealed how the character got its name in the first place. In the winter of 1941 she was in bed with pneumonia and asked her mother to tell her stories about falling asleep. When Lindgren threatened to run out of clothes at some point, Nyman asked: «Tell me about Pippi Longstocking! But it was just a name that came to my mind. »

“Pippi Longstocking” as a birthday present
It wasn’t until March 1944, when she herself had to rest because of a sprained foot, that Lindgren recognized the potential and recorded the story. On May 21, 1944, she gave her daughter the manuscript on her tenth birthday, a copy of which went to several publishers. The original edition appeared in 1945. May 21, 1945 is therefore considered the date of birth of the book heroine with the braids sticking out, although the first edition only came on November 26.

Corona does not spare Pippi either: the big festival in Stockholm planned for next Thursday has already been canceled. And the season opening of the Astrid Lindgren world in Småland, in which the Villa Kunterbunt was enlarged especially for this year, has been postponed until further notice.
