The pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced in a statement you’re ready to launch a potential vaccine against him coronavirus in September.
The firm said it has closed an agreement to launch at least 400 million doses of the vaccine it is developing with the Oxford University.
AstraZeneca says it is capable of producing a billion doses of the AZD1222 vaccine this year and next.
Initial tests are underway and the company acknowledged that the vaccine may not work. But the company said it is committed to advancing the clinical program.
Scientists have warned that a coronavirus vaccine, if developed, may not grant full immunity, while the British prime minister, Boris Johnson, has said that the vaccine may never be found.
Despite these reservations, research continues, with around 80 groups around the world working on possible vaccines.
Global tragedy
AstraZeneca indicated that production could take place in more than one country. The company thanked the United Kingdom and United States governments for the “supporting substance to accelerate the development and production of the vaccine.”
He also said he is in talks with the Serum Institute of India and other potential partners to increase production and distribution.
Specifically, he indicated that he has received more than a billion dollars of support from the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) for the development, production and distribution of the vaccine.
Pascal Soriot, CEO of AstraZeneca described the coronavirus pandemic as a “global tragedy” and a “challenge for humanity”.
“We need to beat the virus together or it will continue to generate enormous suffering and lasting economic and social wounds in every country in the world,” said Soriot.
“We are very proud to collaborate with the University of Oxford to achieve a medicine that can be produced on a global scale,” said the businessman.
