AstraZeneca unveiled this October to the winners of their R&D Postdoctoral Challenge 2023. One of them is Javier Aguirre Rivera from Chihuahua, from the University of Uppsala in Sweden, who presented the proposal: “Multiplexed optimization of mRNA translation for nucleotide therapies.”
The young man said that it was really a surprise when they told him that he was one of the challenge winners. His mother was the first person he spoke to to tell him the good news, then his brothers.
“What I propose with my project is to optimize the protein synthesis of each RNA messenger (mRNA). And to generate many more proteins from each mRNA, I want to explore areas that are on the sides of the protein-coding region. This is not so investigated yet,” explained Aguirre Rivera.

What is mRNA?
He mRNA is a type of single-stranded RNA that participates in protein synthesis, that is, in the construction of new proteins, as explained by the National Human Genome Research Institute. Proteins are large and complex molecules vital for the work, or a good part of them, carried out by cells and “they are necessary to maintain the structure, function and regulation of the tissues and organs of the body,” complements the center.
He mexican scientist assured that he seeks to prove millions of different mRNA sequences and observe how this affects the synthesis of proteins.
“Thus, we could find the rules to generate a messenger RNA that we can use for the treatment of different diseases, such as cystic fibrosis and hemophilia,” he said.
