AstraZeneca and Oxford University resume vaccine testing

Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford have resumed testing of their corona vaccine in the UK. The British public health regulator has given permission for this.

Testing was discontinued around the world on September 6 because a subject in the UK had developed serious and unexplained symptoms. The news came this week outwards.

The British regulator started an investigation to find out whether the complaints were related to the administration of the test vaccine. Apparently that is not the case. AstraZeneca says the investigation has been completed and the regulator recommends that testing continues in the UK. Whether that also applies to other countries is still unclear. It is also being tested in Brazil, the United States and South Africa.

Spinal cord inflammation

A spokesperson for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirmed yesterday to the NOS, that the subject who became ill had an acute inflammation of the spinal cord. In July there was a participant who had similar complaints. AstraZeneca’s investigation was also then halted. After examination, it turned out that this participant, without knowing it, was suffering from multiple sclerosis. The investigation could then be resumed after a few days.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is one of six vaccines that may enter the market in the Netherlands, and one of the few that is already being tested in a phase 3 study. A total of 300 to 400 million of these vaccines have been reserved by the European Union, the first of which are expected to be on the market by the end of this year at the earliest.
