ASPERHOFEN / ATZENBRUGG. The anticipation for the first football game in the Vienna Woods since 2019 was great. Over 200 visitors did not miss the opening game of the Asperhofen Blue Hawks against the Styrian Reavers on Sunday. Even in the run-up to the game, the atmosphere in the stands was great when the youth teams of the two teams played a friendly match. The young Blue Hawks had to admit defeat to the strong Reavers, but they gained a lot of experience.
Promising first drive
The game of the fighting teams began with a lightning start for the home team. After a long kickoff return, the Blue Hawks rolled quickly across the field on the first drive of the game. After a great catch and a successful running play, however, lack of concentration and avoidable mistakes crept in, so that you had to give up the ball right without points.
The defensives dominate
The guests also had a hard time against the strong Blue Hawks Defense in the beginning and couldn’t score in the first drives. Only when the Blue Hawks Offense stood with their backs to the wall shortly before their own end zone after a strong point by the Styrians, the first points were scored. Too high a snap through one’s own end zone meant a safety (2 points).
Subsequently, the Reavers managed the only touchdown of the game until then, a further pass into the end zone and the subsequent extra point resulted in the halftime score 0: 9 for the guests.
Half 2: Clear final score
The second half was a reflection of the first half. The Blue Hawks Defense often put the Styrian offense in their place and kept the game open for a long time, but the local offense could not capitalize on it. Too many mistakes and coordination problems, as well as a solid defense of the guests, stood in the way of the Blue Hawks. For a long time it was still a close affair. Only when you risked more and more in the last quarter, the Reavers were able to use this and increase the score with two touchdowns and a field goal. Final score – 0:26
