ASML receives first order for new euv machine and records 33 percent more turnover – Computer – News

ASML has achieved 33 percent more turnover in 2021 than in 2020 and the manufacturer expects a 20 percent higher turnover for 2022. The fire at the German factory would not have a significant impact on the production of EUV machines. ASML received an order for a new euv machine.

ASML’s annual turnover amounted to 18.6 billion euros, compared to 14 billion euros in 2020. Company delivered 42 euv chip machines in 2021 and that resulted in a turnover of 6.3 billion euros. Chip manufacturers such as TSMC, Intel and Samsung order euv machines to produce the latest generation of processors and the memory market is also switching to euv technology. In 2020, ASML delivered 31 EUV machines, representing a turnover of 4.5 billion euros.

In 2021, EUV systems were responsible for 46 percent of ASML’s revenue. Traditional ArFi lithography machines account for 36 percent of systems revenue. ASML delivered 81 such systems versus 68 in 2020. Chip manufacturers expanded their production capacity last year due to high demand and the issues related to chip shortages.

“We are experiencing a higher demand for our systems than our production capacity can accommodate,” ASML CEO Peter Wennink reported. In order to provide customers with ordered EUV machines faster, ASML will carry out fewer tests in its own factory, but relocated these to customers’ locations. The final tests must then provide a definitive answer about the correct operation, after which the customer can approve the machine. ASML can then credit the turnover from the delivery of those machines with a delay. ASML expects, for example, that the turnover of six EUV machines that the company will deliver this year will not be achieved until 2023.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, ASML received an order for the Twinscan EXE:5000. This is a machine that is still in the R&D phase and works on the basis of a numerical aperture of 0.55 and can therefore describe chip structures with even smaller features than the current euv machines. They work on the basis of a numerical aperture of 0.33. ASML now has an improved variant of the EXE:5000 in the form of the EXE:5200.

In early 2022, Intel . placed the first order of this 5200 euv machine, both companies report. They expect production of this so-called high-after EUV technology to start in 2025 and the machine should then achieve a productivity of 200 wafers per hour. In 2018, Intel was the first to order an EXE:5000 from ASML. The manufacturer hopes to be able to use the high-after EUV machines quickly with the experience gained. This technology should last for several node generations from 2025. At that time, chip manufacturers referred to their nodes with angstrom numbers, where this is still done in nanometers.

ASML reported little on the consequences of the fire at a German facility for the production of EUV machines on Wednesday morning. At the beginning of January that fire took place and this hit the production of parts of euv machines. “We believe we can handle the consequences of the fire without a significant impact on the output of systems in 2022,” is all ASML wanted to say. An explanation of the consequences may follow later on Wednesday.
