Alarm and panic in the German daily Die Welt, which has been publishing critical texts on the United Right for years and is constantly interfering in Polish affairs. This time the jittering of the editors caused a good election result by Andrzej Duda. However, Die Welt decided that the incumbent president was not a “winner”. The daily, however, still seems to count on Rafał Trzaskowski’s success in the second round of elections. The author from “Die Welt” doesn’t even hide that the president of Warsaw will be an easier partner for talks on German reparations for Poland.
Trzaskowski could disrupt PiS’s building of the “Fourth Republic”. As president, he could also impose a less confrontational tone in the relations between the Polish authorities and Germany, because he is critical of possible Polish reparation demands against Germany

Correspondent Die Welt also reminds that Andrzej Duda is called by his critics a “pen”. He doesn’t even mention the important veto of the president, thanks to which he showed the independence of his office.
Until now, he had signed almost every PiS bill and thus paved the way for this party’s increasingly authoritarian policy, starting from media reform to rebuilding the judiciary. The president has not only a representative role, but is the guardian of the Polish constitution – or one who can harm it. He also has competence in foreign policy and is the head of the armed forces

German journalists are afraid of a strong president who talks hard with our western neighbors and focuses on the national interest rather than the particular interests of German supporters in the Polish opposition.
