# 3 is called boxing dementia because it was first described in boxers, I think around the 20s of the last century. It is considered a variant of chronic trumatic encephalopathy and the damage is produced by microbleeds and subsequent pathophysiological damage caused by repeated blows to the head, especially in the frontal area, where the executive functions are located (responsible, among others, for the behavioral control). Those affected show cortical atrophy and symptoms include psychosis, severe mood disorders, cognitive impairment, and motor disorders that resemble parkinsonians (in fact, subcortical damage is also often seen). It usually appears after about 12 years practicing sports that involve this type of trauma. Its appearance is accelerated and aggravated by multiple concussions and even with protections, such as the helmet, it can occur. In fact, it has been questioned whether soccer players who repeatedly head off could actually introduce them. Psychological problems are derived directly from the damage suffered by the brain. Its origin is none other than an infinity of vascular microlesions and due to the inflammatory reaction (diffuse axonal damage has also been described).
