Artificial Sweeteners: A Popular Product Turns Life-Threatening for Healthy Food Lovers

Upside down: a product popular with healthy food lovers was recognized as life-threatening

People wanted to be healthy, but it turned out that everything is not so.

A popular product among healthy food lovers was recognized as life-threatening. Scientists from Spain said that artificial sweeteners increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes. A scientific review conducted by researchers confirms the negative impact of artificial sweeteners, which were previously promoted as a calorie-reducing and sugar replacement.

However, a paper by researchers published in the journal Current Opinion in Cardiology takes a detailed look at the negative impact of sweeteners on the development of obesity and the most important cardiometabolic risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidaemia and diabetes).

The harmful effects of a high-calorie, high-sugar diet are well known. For this reason, health authorities recommend limiting sugar intake. This recommendation prompted the food industry to develop various artificial sweeteners. Initially, their consumption was presented as an alternative for overweight and obese people. But as explained in the article, consumption of artificial sweeteners contributes to weight gain due to satiety-related neuroendocrine mechanisms that are abnormally activated when artificial sweeteners are consumed.

It is also stated that artificial sweeteners cause serious disturbances in the endocrine system. The review found that consumption of artificial sweeteners increased the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 24% and increased the risk of metabolic syndrome by 44%.

Scientists warn that there are especially many artificial sweeteners in non-alcoholic diet drinks.
