Artificial intelligence capable of predicting stroke and heart attack

In France, cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death, behind cancer. Rapid detection of symptoms, at a stage where the sick can still be saved, is therefore a public health issue. Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), it is possible to predict heart and stroke risks in patients.

Coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, congenital heart disease, pulmonary embolism … Cardiovascular disease often has a common symptom: decreased blood flow due to the formation of a fatty deposit on the internal walls of the vessels, as explained Health Magazine.

To detect it, doctors usecardiac magnetic resonance imaging, which examines the structures and functioning of the heart, valves and the main veins and arteries.

“Better patient care”

This is where the AI comes in. Researchers at University College London (UCL) came up with the idea of using artificial intelligence to analyze cardiac resonance images with 1,000 patients and thus measure blood flow with great reliability.

In their study published in the journal circulation, scientists have found, after comparing the results generated by the AI with the health records of the patients examined, that people with reduced blood flow are more at risk of dying from stroke, heart attack or heart failure.

The researchers are convinced of this: their method makes it possible to predict the risk of death of a patient, in a much more certain way than with traditional methods. “Since poor blood circulation is treatable, these better predictions lead to better patient care, as well as giving us new information about how the heart works“, say the authors of the study.
