Art, Sustainability | Drowning statue attracts attention

Since it appeared unannounced last week, the statue of a young girl drowning in the Nervion River in Bilbao has created unrest among the population of the Spanish city.

Last Thursday, the sensational statue of a young girl drowning appeared in the Nervion River in the Spanish city of Bilbao, according to Reuters.

The Mexican artist Ruben Orozco is behind the hyper-realistic statue “Bihar”. Bihar means “tomorrow” in Basque and is designed to create debate about sustainability and the environment. As the tide changes, the 120 kg fiberglass statue disappears into the river.

“The goal of the statue is to make people aware that their actions can sink us or make us float,” Orozco told the Spanish online newspaper Nius.

Several residents of Bilbao react to the sensational statue.

– When more of her face was on the surface, she gave me a feeling of stress. Now that she is under water, she gives me a feeling of sadness, says Triana Gil, who is a visitor to Bilbao, to the newspaper.

Another visitor can tell that she first thought the statue was a memorial, writes Reuters.

– I have learned today that this is not the goal behind the statue, but I think that people can interpret the statue as they want, says the visitor.
