Light art and rock music, 3D performances and currywurst: after a two-year Corona break, the Ruhr area has its “Extraschicht” cultural festival back. Almost 200,000 visitors flocked to the 43 venues in 23 cities – from Unna to Moers, as the organizers announced on Sunday. It is the largest cultural festival in the region.

There was music, comedy, art, theater and acrobatics in former collieries, blast furnaces, machine halls, museums and on factory premises. “That’s almost as many visitors as before Corona. We are very satisfied with this return,” said a spokeswoman. Before the pandemic, up to 300,000 people attended in the peak years.

The training mine in Recklinghausen was particularly popular this time. But also the 3D holoperformances and the laser shows of the Electric Dance Theater in Dinslaken-Lohberg as well as the video mapping installation at the Hanover colliery attracted many visitors.

Venues included the former Zollverein colliery in Essen and the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen, the Henrichenburg ship lift in Waltrop and the airship hangar at Mülheim Airport.
–
“The number of visitors shows us that the principle of “extra shift” still inspires people, they want to experience something again,” said Axel Biermann, Managing Director of Ruhr Tourismus.
